On June 25, Royal Decree 391/2019 came to light, approving the National Technical Plan for Digital Terrestrial Television and regulating certain aspects for the release of the second digital dividend.

Television has to make room in its frequency band for our smartphones:

This space left by DTT is occupied by mobile telephony in what we call 5G integration. This second digital dividend, what it deals with is the release of a number of frequencies, specifically those that go from channels 50 onwards. Something that already happened in the first digital divide back in 2010 from 60 onwards.

¿Why do we change channels?

The reason is clear. This freed space will be aimed at mobile telephony, allowing us to have better connectivity and speed. Being a demand required by society and current technology.

¿What do we have to do?

Well, what it is now is to move the channels that are between 50 and 60 and move them to other channels located below.

¿When do I have to do the change?

As in the previous dividend, there will be a period called «simultaneous issuance«; where they will be broadcast on both channels, old and new, at the same time. If we make a new channel tuning on our television, we can see how most of them can be duplicated.

This term is designed to give communities and households time to adapt to the new dividend.

The final blackout will be on June 30, 2020. Therefore, by this date, whoever has not made the necessary modifications, may begin to have problems in receiving the DTT signal.

For particulars and communities

In the event that you are a private individual and have your own DTT antenna, in principle there should be no changes. In the event that you start having signal problems, you would only have to add a 5G filter.

These possible 5G interferences will come later, since the telephone companies will gradually increase the 5G signal repeaters. It will not be immediate.

The communities will have to update the single-channel header or reprogram the programmable plant. In the case of very small communities that have a broadband system, they would only have to put a 5G filter in case they began to have interference.
